Things you will find in my sketchbook
When I get a task for a completely new effect and there is enough time (or in general just for fun), I like to do some sketches before I work on the computer just to gather some ideas and check what works visually, shape-wise and (in case the effect is supposed to be a bit more abstract) what people associate with certain things (for example healing, damage, buffs/debuffs).
Please note that most handwritten things on my pictures were supposed to me notes for myself and never intended to be read by someone else. You may find it difficult to read it.

Different sketches to pass the time on the train. Upper part: Ideas for spherical energy-based shields, science fiction themed.
Mid part: Playing with smoke and explosions, smoke of a rocket launch. Lower part: Torch with momentum, aggressive spell, a cube with all aggregation states, buildup of a bubble.

Ideas for different beam weapons, science fiction themed
Testing what works best for an abstract debuff FX (The smoke is not related to it)
Liquid FX to pass compiling and loading times
Some sketches I did before starting an effect for my 2017 portfolio
Something I did for my fourth semester student project to find the art style of our movement trails.
Also for "Coming out the window". I drew this to find the style for our hit-FX.
Two of our favorite versions (#7 and #13) got merged and made into a video to test how it could look in the end
